All our suffering comes from thinking about the future or the past: what we want and fear we won't get, or what we lost or are afraid of losing, or what mistakes we made. Everything can be restored in proper order, or even better the faster that we turn our attention to the GOOD. In every catastrophe is the seed of something wonderful if we don't give up before the miracle. "I will restore to you the days the locust has eaten."

FINALLY OBAMA is right. He is the moral conscience of our country. Thank God he brought up the sickening game of politics and the horrifying Supreme Court reversal of a 100-year-old decision, which will now allow lobbyists from the wealthiest corporations, foreign agents, terrorists or anyone with money to buy politicians. This kind of corruption cannot be legalized.

Thank God he said GAYS must be allowed in the militiary - a civil rights issue, and EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK for WOMEN!!

It is a shame that the greatest nation on earth is at a standstill — unable to move forward and create new wealth, jobs, green industries — while China, India and Germany rush forward into the new millennium without a Republican obstructionist party spewing lies and fear, a party that cares more about getting re-elected than it does about the American people, enabled by a timid bunch of Dems, who are equally afraid of the bullies.

Thank God we have a president who gets it — an intelligent, moral, reasonable and compassionate man who is humble enough to see his own faults clearly. At first I thought he had been threatened by the Powers-that-Be. I almost believed the conspiracy theorists who believed Obama had been threatened with assassination by a triumvirate consisting of the military industrial complex, the banking empirate and the pharmaceutical mafia. Rumor has it according to Norman Solomon - that the Military industrial complex was responsbile for the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., JFK and Bobby.

But his State of the Union speech gave me hope that Obama is finally seeing that he can't negotiate with Republicans. A man is worth nothing if he doesn't stand for what's right. Bullies can't win and might does not make right.

Anonymous left a comment saying that all was well with my marriage, and at home. Anonymous: I thank you for reminding me of the Law of Life. That good is the only reality. You must be a metaphysician (which is the way of Christ) -- seeing reality as the opposite of the limited, negative mortal view.

You are correct and this is how I should be seeing my formerly "gloomy" situation — for I am a student of metaphysics. There are no problems, only challenges that show me what needs to be healed. I am seeing the opposite of love in our arguments, and these are all fear-based concerns. Fear of death, loss, abandonment... fear of being out of control, of not having enough, of losing what we have, of not getting what we want. All this fear makes us live in the future or the past, but never in the present reality — where everything is fine. Now, this actual very moment is all there really is. There is no guarantee we'll be here tomorrow. The Haitian earthquake, and that car accident proved to me that life can be over in an instant. My precious brother's death showed me how fragile and temporal life is. And all that remains are the good memories. Only love and goodness are real.

There is lovely teacher/angel sleeping on our couch and my teenagers do use the "F" word. But they are using it less and less, the higher I hold them up.

SPIRITUAL OLYMPICS: CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

The past few months have been the hardest — harder than getting sober 15 years ago. My family seems to be disconnected, and I have been unable to communicate with the people I live with, or anyone around me (only those in recovery, who seem to be on a deeper level.) Everyone else thinks I'm attacking them when I simply ask a question or speak to them. I feel I'm from another planet. It is so hard having to take care of everyone's moods and moodswings. Can't live this way anymore.

"Put down the microscope and pick up the mirror," is one of the best sayings in Alanon. "Detach with love and SHUT YOUR MOUTH," are other ones. In recovery/12-step programs we learn to detach with love from other people's abuse, garbage and accusations. We learn to stop controlling others and stop nagging, whining, worrying, begging and complaining. Each person has his/her own higher power. The only thing we can control is our own attitude. I don't have to respond the same old way. I don't have to react to the crazy things they say, or engage in tit-for-tat arguments. "Say it once, be agreeable and walk away." If someone doesn't get me, or see that I have good intentions, no matter how garbled, or messy it comes out... or if they are abusive to me, I can quietly leave the room.

The most important thing is to be grounded and strong for the children living in this house. I need to not panic or be frantic when no one is doing homework, or when teenagers are shouting the "F" word at me. Teenagers are not nice people, but I can choose to leave the room and not tolerate assholishness.

Today on the I-10, a car in the very next lane in on-coming traffic flipped over two times and it's hood flew off onto our lane. It seemed to rise up and fly over the top of our car, with metal debris flying all over the place. It was like watching a movie. I looked back and was astonished that the car didn't hit anyone else. My husband was shell-shocked; he was sure the driver and passengers had been killed.

God Bless everyone. Hang in there and FOCUS ON THE GOOD. When I turn my thoughts to love and good, the right actions become apparent. The main idea is to get selfishness out of the way and just ask "How can I be of love and service to those around me?" Charity begins at home.

George W. Bush rescued the economy from collapse, according to Karen Hughes. Bush's former campaign director attacked President Barack Obama on NBC Sunday, defending the record of her former boss on the economy.

Speaking about Obama's successes, journalist Mark Halperin praised the current president's handling of the economy. "He's done, I think, an extraordinary job running the government under difficult circumstances. He managed the economic crisis, kept the world from going into depression," said Halperin.

But Hughes quickly took objection to Halperin's assessment. "I have to disagree with you, Mark, about rescuing the economy," she said. "I think that happened before President Bush left office when they took the action that they did on TARP and the banks have now repaid much of that money but that's what stabilized the economy and prevented the collapse of the financial system."

At a time when at least 140 banks failed just within weeks of Bush leaving the White House, record deficits due to excessive wars and tax breaks for the wealthy, and run away corruption from Wall Street and Corporate America; now Bush's friends claim he saved the economy.

Do the millions of unemployed Americans feel Bush saved the economy? Do the millions who have faced or are about to face foreclosure feel Bush saved their homes? Do those victims from Katrina, who were abandoned by Bush and left with nothing think Bush saved the economy?

Bush has been hiding in the rag weeds of Texas while millions upon millions are suffering at the despicable policies of George W Bush. Bush didn't save the economy, he turned it into Hell on Earth!

When I was in Officer Training School back in the sixties, the very first thing we cadets were taught was the Honor Code. It was simplicity itself, and it was drummed into our heads daily:

"I will not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate among us those who do."

Stanley McChrystal is a West Point graduate whose own father was a General Officer and whose brother was an Army chaplain (Assemblies of God variety), Yet McChrystal seems somehow not to have learned the Honor Code. What were they teaching up there on the Hudson in the early seventies?

McChrystal is a war-lover who did an end-run around his Commander-in-Chief with the adoring press to get what he wanted in Afghanistan. For that he should have been court-martialed for insubordination. Instead, it seems to have worked. According to McClatchy News today, Obama is about to give him 34,000 more warm bodies.

Here is a little reminder of McChrystal's behavior in the Pat Tillman matter: Please tell me how it squares with the Honor Code::

This is how the law of life works: when you give, you receive. And the more you give, the more you receive.

It is wonderful the way love created a full circle of gifts. The one thing in the world the cab driver wanted, he received — as a result of his kindness and generosity.

Here's what's interesting. The woman was rude and bitchy to the cab driver. She dreaded that he was always the one sent to drive her because he was always late and always got lost. She presented herself as a bitter, unhappy woman who complained a lot.

What is amazing about this is that the cab driver did not spew anger or bark back at the rude woman. He quietly persisted in trying to first understand her behavior. He wondered why she was so bitchy and mean-spirited. "A soft answer turns away wrath."

Question: If the cab driver had yelled or cursed or been equally rude to the woman — if he had retaliated in an "eye for an eye" way — would he have been the perfect donor match for this woman?

Obviously he would not have been open-hearted enough to even offer his kidney — but let's take it a step further. If he were a miserly, hateful, angry person — would he have had the right chemistry, the correct DNA, or even have a healthy kidney to give her?

What do you think? I believe his open-hearted attitude toward the rude woman — and his gentle persistence in trying to understand her pain — was the compassion that created the donor match. Anyone can be loving to someone who is loving to them first, but when we are loving to those who hate us and persecute us, we disarm them. We conquer our enemies. (By the way, that is the mark of a true Christian; the one who turns the other cheek and loves his enemies and his neighbor as himself.

Love is creative. It creates life. The cab driver's loving compassion actually made his kidney the right donor match.

Love in the face of hatred is the law of attraction. Like attracts like; hence, the kidney match. I know this may sound difficult to wrap your mind around, but with an understanding of Quantum Physics, it is simple to understand.

If the cab driver had been a jerk just like she was, there would have been no healing or gifts received. There would have just been two hollow, hateful people passing like ships in the night. Maybe the cabbie would have had to learn his lesson in another way.

But two jerks usually cancel each other out. So it's our job, each of us, to go out into the world and do what we can to make someone happy. Here's how simple it is: Love creates life. When we express love, no matter how someone else is behaving, everyone involved in an argument is healed.

I don't mean to repeat myself but this is an important point, and a major discovery. Love heals. it is a creative force. Hate is a destructive force; it does not create life — it kills life. Just as darkness is the absence of light, and coldness is the absence of warmth, hatred is the absence of love. Hatred, darkness and cold have no power of their own. They are not self-starters.

This man took a bad situation and shined love on it. By his generosity, he enabled his kidney to be the right one as a donor match.

How is this possible?

In Quantum physics, scientists have proven that our loving attention to an object actually changes the object in the physical universe.

We have been conditioned to believe that the external world is more real than the internal world. Quantum Physics says just the opposite: what’s happening on the inside determines what’s happening on the outside. Our world is shaped by our thoughts. So your loving attention to something, literally alters the physical universe. This is scientific, but it is not easily understood.

Energy consists of sub-atomic particles that in turn make up atoms and finally matter. This energy exists as waves spread out over space and time. They have discovered that down to the tiniest atom, there is only empty space. There is no solid matter. Everything is energy. Everything exists in waves of infinite possibility. Only when we focus our attention on an object does that object become a particle. We "particularize" an object by our attention to it.

So thoughts really are things. And 85% of all disease is caused by stress -- which means worry, fear or misplaced thoughts that become ingrained habits of negativity. There is now scientific proof that loving thoughts actually create a thicker brain cortex. Monks who meditate on love regularly have no disease.

Dr. Christine Northrup says "Hope is a biochemical state in the body that promotes healing."

Laughter heals. And we know that love heals everything. Love is the actual definition of God. (If only the hateful Christian and Muslim fundamentalists knew that; they seem to omit Christ's teachings form their form of Christianity. Very bizarre.

LOVE (GOD) IS INTERACTIVE AND NEEDS OUR "COLLUSION" OR COOPERATION TO WORK

To have "miracles" and results, we need to cooperate with love or goodness or God (they all mean the same thing) because it is an interactive force. By our loving, selfless action, we create harmony and goodwill. By being loving and giving, this man became the perfect match.

In this case, the Universe kept putting the cabbie and the woman together because the woman needed to be "driven" into submission by the cab driver's gentleness. That's how the Great Peacemaker healed so-called "sinners" — by his revolutionary softness. He didn't condemn the adulterer or the thief; his unconditional love made them want to walk in the light, and transformed their hearts. Whether you believe the healing miracles or not, loving your enemies actually works. "A soft answer turns away wrath."

In any case, fate/the universe/God or whatever you call your higher power — kept putting the cab driver and the bitch together because they each had a missing piece that created the whole; the full circle.

It is wonderful the way love created a full circle of gifts. The one thing in the world the cab driver wanted, he received — as a result of his generosity. The antidote to poverty and depression is generosity. This cab driver acted exactly as the Great Peacemaker would; he gave freely without thought of self. And he received everything.

And what was the catalyst? Returning love for hate. The cab driver persisted in being loving to his enemy.

If people who call themselves Christians were practicing true Christianity, we wouldn't be in this financial crisis which created a house of cards in the financial industry.

BREAKING THE LAW

.... America has broken the laws of nature: choosing to spend our treasure on WAR and DEATH instead of HEALTH CARE and LIFE. Focusing on the fetal tissue rather than already living, breathing citizens who need food, heat and water and health care. This is an abomination that is being punished by reality.

THE COST OF WAR vs THE COST OF HEALTH CARE

By their fruits you know them: trillion dollar war resulting in destruction and death. Collapsed economy as a result of greed and elitism and lies.

America is suffering from breaking the laws of nature. Cheney and Bush lied us into a war based on oil, greed and false motives. The lie is always the beginning of breaking the moral law, the law of good. So-called "Christians" of the right wing actually think God cares about fetal tissue and punishing gay people for daring to be gay. But God only cares about how we treat each other. They are filled with hate and arrogance, just like the pharisees of Christ's time. They are crucifying Love, and Christ all over again.

The killings, the corruption, the stealing, the continuing lies about free health care for every citizen -- calling free health care and free help "death panels" ??? and Dachau concentration camps and the principle of good: treat each human being as you want to be treated, even if he's poor, or gay or addicted or female or Black or Latino or Muslim.

First let me say this: I do not believe in a devil or in an anthropomorphic "God" - a man-like God sitting in the sky. I believe in the law of Love, the power of good which is the Christ Truth within each of us. This has nothing to do with religion. All religion is man-made. Jesus himself did not like religion or the religious leaders, the Pharisees. He called them hypocrites. The Kingdom is within us. This is the law of the universe. What you give out, you receive back.

Our nation is suffering from breaking the law of love. Michelle Bachman is the consummate liar. And she is the opposite of love.

God in this sense, as LOVE, is actually scientific. In other words, healing happens when we are loving. It is proven on a biochemical level. You can measure your serenity or agitation based on the thoughts you think. Monks who meditate on love each day, and send loving thoughts out to the suffering world, have brains that healthier, with few if any scars caused by stress, fear and worry.

Metaphorically, the serpent, the liar, the devil is always the ACCUSER. The one with the loudest, most aggressive voice. The one who shouts down all good deeds. The one who covers a bad motive with a good motive. The one who takes from the poor to give to the rich. The meek shall inherit the earth.

We are supposed to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. But America has lost it's way. We have broken the laws of nature, the principle of the universe: the Golden Rule, the Law of Love. We have followed the serpent: The one who comforts the comfortable and dismisses the afflicted.

There is no such thing as a "modern" Christian. This person is not a Christian, if you mean a politically vocal evangelical American fundamentalist.

This is the anti-christ.

Judgmental "Christian" Fundamentalists who go by the old Testament, judge others, cast stones, collect guns, love war, believe and speak lies (tea-baggers, birthers, Glen Beck, Michelle Bachman, abortion doctor murderers, gay-haters; Kennedy haters who never forgive humbly redeemed souls their mistakes or crimes) all of whom ignore Christ's teachings completely, leaving the love and forgiveness out of their evangelism, are the exact opposite of Christ.

By their fruits you shall know them. America's fruits: suicidal soldiers, choosing to spend our treasure on WAR AND DEATH instead of HEALTH CARE AND LIFE. Focusing on the fetal tissue rather than breathing living citizens who need heat and water and health care. This is an abomination that will be punished by reality.

MAJOR NIDAL MALIK HASAN FORT HOOD SUSPECT STILL ALIVE

General Details Chaotic Scene After Deadly Shooting At Military Base... Suspect In Custody, In Stable Condition... Allegedly Sympathized With Suicide Bombers In Writings

FORT HOOD, Texas — An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorites said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive and in stable condition under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. "I would say his death is not imminent," Cone said. Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot at least four times.

The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old, eight-year veteran from Virginia.
President Barack Obama called the shooting at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, "a horrific outburst of violence."

"It's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans in battles overseas," the commander in chief said. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."

My friend (not pictured here) whom Cristina and I rescued from a extremely violent domestic abuse situation, is staying with me and just beginning to heal and have hope. In years, no one has had the time to listen to her story or help her. No one has believed her -- that a person so sweet could have everything taken from her for no reason at all. She is prone to giggle at the slightest courtesy. She has been through so much pain and violence, that when someone opens a door for her at the grocery store — stops to actually help her cross the street, figure out a parking ticket or actually talk to her and listen — she is overjoyed. Talk about appreciating life. When everything is taken from you, you can really be grateful for the little things.

ONE DAY AT A TIME IN ALANON... Some thoughts from my friend Mary in Shanghai:

After being sober for a while I see that no situation lasts forever. I used to have this horrible sense of urgency around my problems that I had to impulsively just do "something" to fix it all immediately or I would be so uncomfortable in my own skin, anxious and worried and burdened. So coming from this anxiety I often acted wrongly or suffered needlessly. I thought if I didn't do something about it right now it would be here for all time. Now I know that everything passes eventually.

Today, I can ask myself "What can I do about this right here, right now?" This question helps me to identify my responsibilities today surrounding this more realistically and shows me what part of the situation is beyond my control today. What I cannot do today I turn over. I remember I am in the footwork business, God is in the results business.

Reasoning things out with my sponsor or someone from the fellowship can help me to seperate todays problems with those of the past and the future. I will trust my Higher Power with tomorrow.
Then I do what I can and "turn over" the rest. In the 12-step program we turn our burdens, worries and fears over to our higher power.

Last week, JP Morgan agreed to a $722 million settlement with the SEC stemming from a risky derivatives deal that drove Alabama's most populous county to the brink of bankruptcy. As part of the settlement, JPMorgan neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing -- despite ample evidence that it had engaged in plenty of wrongdoing. This is what passes for justice on Wall Street: regulators give a company a ding to its bottom line, and are ready to quickly forget the whole thing and allow the company to move on to the next lucrative money-printing scheme. When corporate perpetrators don't have to admit they did anything wrong, it's as if the crime never happened. Which, of course, makes it much more likely that it will happen again.

"Spielberg made his first film at the age of 13, as a Boy Scout merit badge project in Phoenix, Ariz. "It was three minutes long," he recalled with a faint smile. That was how it all started and now this directing genius’s name alone can sell a movie, it might as well be trade marked for "no director or producer has put together a more popular body of work. That’s why the movies we’re seeing now are made in his image." (Ebert http://cgi.pathfinder.com/time/asia/magazine/1998/980608/spielberg.html). "If money equals success then it is important to point out that his films have made more money than any other director. If success is critical acclaim, then you can point out that he directed more films in the AFI top 100 films of all time than any other director. If success is achieving something with nothing, than you can make the point that he never went to film school, wasn’t rich, and didn’t live in Hollywood when he started." Says Brian Young of Scruffles Steven Spielberg Directory. In this paper I hope to prove that Steven Spielberg’s works put him at the top of all directors and producers, and that film making and our American pop culture would be entirely different had it not been for his countless works.

"Spielberg’s childhood was unlike most children’s, when his father brought home a Lionel train set instead of playing with it the normal way, Steven would crash it over and over. "I would stage these very complex accidents on the rails," Spielberg said, "and somehow, intuitively, I would film these perfect crashes. Steven’s father was more like his male characters in his movies either absent or a bit vague, less in touch with the forces of wonder. "His father’s influence contributed to the techno-wizardry which is the hallmark of most Spielberg films." (Sanello 1). "Arnold Spielberg had mixed feelings about his son’s filmmaking endeavors, and he pushed for a more practical, scientific career. During a quite successful career, Arnold Spielberg worked for IBM, RCA, and GE. He holds a whopping twelve patents in his name." (Sanello 15). "The combination of his mother’s artistic bent provided the aesthetic balance which drove his low-tech character driven films such as Schindler’s List and The Color Purple." (Sanello 1).

In school, Steven was nicknamed "the retard," and once lost a race to a boy in the class whom was actually mentally retarded. Spielberg's tale is a great anecdote of his entire childhood as… a "nerd."

The height of my wimpery came when we had to run a mile for a grade in elementary school," he has said. "The whole class of fifty finished, except for two people left on the track—me and a mentally retarded boy. Of course he ran awkwardly, but I was just never able to run. I was maybe 40 yards ahead of him, and I was only 100 yards away from the finish line. The whole class turned and began rooting for the young retarded boy—cheering him, saying, ‘C’mon, c’mon, beat Spielberg! Run, run! It was like he came to life for the first time, and he began to pour it on but still not fast enough to beat me. And I remember thinking, ‘OK, now how am I gonna fall and make it look like I really fell?’ And I remember actually stepping on my toe and going face hard into the red clay of the track and actually scraping my nose. Everybody cheered when I fell, and then they began to really scream for this guy: ‘C’mon, John, c’mon, run, run!’ I got up just as John came up behind me, and I began running as if to beat him but not really win, running to let him win. We were nose to nose, and suddenly laid back a step, then half step. Suddenly he was ahead, then he was a chest ahead, then a length, and then he crossed the finish line ahead of me. Everybody grabbed this guy, and threw him on their shoulders and carried him into the locker room, and into the showers, and I stood there on the track field and cried my eyes out for five minutes. I’d never felt better and I’d never felt worse in my life. (Sanello 18)

"I was skinny and unpopular. I was the weird, skinny kid with acne. I hate to use the word wimp, but I wasn’t in the inner loop. I never felt comfortable with myself, because I was never part of the majority." (Sanello 19). Other events included the failed attempt of dissecting a frog in biology class where he left the room to stand outside with the other weak stomached students "They were all girls." Spielberg later said. It was a scene that was later echoed in ET. He even cut off his knuckle while trying to demonstrate how to sharpen an axe in boy scouts, before 500 peers." (Sanello 19). Taking all of this into consideration would you have expected this young unpopular, awkward looking boy to become the most successful director and producer of all time and the creator of such films as Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan?

After the series ended, I went to hell and back. I really went through some terrifying dark days, months, years. But then I had a "catastrophic awakening." A supernatural force literally lifted me up and installed into me a peace of mind I never thought possible. When I gave up alcohol, drugs, worry and fear — a veil of anesthesia lifted. Amazing coincidences started happening; I found a key to the door by simply surrendering the intellectual habit of being arrogant. You have to become as innocent as a child to let this gift in.

I want to clear a few thing up that I said about religion. I’m not putting down the fundamentalists — but the most vocal ones do not act Christian at all. In fact, they are anti-Christ. Fundamentalist Christianity is in many ways, anti-Christ. Christ is LOVE, the love born into each soul. Jesus did not want us to worship him or his personality or his Jesusness. The Christ is the love in each of us. We are all to abide in love and never to judge others. We are to love our enemy, love our neighbor, and to meet hatred with love. How can any Christian call himself a Christian and condemn anyone for being different? Did God make a mistake? How can they deprive gays of the right to marry each other? Have they taken the plank out of their own eye?

You know how when you’re in a room with a terrorist or someone who is extremely hateful, you can actually feel the resentment coming off the person? Well, quantum physicists have have discovered that enthusiasm and courage actually change your brain waves, which changes the molecular structure around you. Positive energy has an invisible charge, just like the invisible molecules of electricity. Our thoughts have true, tangible energy.

String theory is exciting to me because it proves harmony (beauty, truth, love = God) on a molecular level. All the most important things are invisible to the conscious eye: love, beauty, joy, thought. If we only believed in what we could see, then we would still believe the earth was flat — and not spinning. Galileo, who was condemned by the Catholic Church for saying that the earth revolved around the sun — and forced to state that it stands still, muttered, “Nevertheless, it does spin!”

I believe our primary purpose in this existence is to learn to love and accept ourselves and then transfer that love and acceptance to others. Spirituality for me means smashing the ego. It’s about human kindness, seeing the good in others no matter how badly they are behaving. It’s not sitting on some mountain top in a self-centered quest to find God. But the only solution to personal agony is to start focusing on love, which is a power greater than yourself.

But everything has to be taken with a dose of humor; laughter is the best drug.

Nothing breaks my heart more than abused, neglected and abandoned children. I am hoping to join the board of an orphanage soon. I am also mentoring teen girls in a new after-school program which will be announced soon.

Beverly Hills CA- In honor of October being named National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), the country’s best beauty experts and physicians have partnered up with Los Angeles based non-profit organization, Safe Passage, to provide complete makeovers to five local domestic abuse survivors. These businesses will join a national campaign designed to “cut out” domestic violence by offering victims a “new look” on life.

Author, actress and radio host Lydia Cornell will emcee the event, and introduce Trish Steele, the founder of Safe Passage and Women of Brilliant Achievement Honoree 2008.

DVAM is a time for collective action, to celebrate survivors of the Movement, raise public awareness, and remember the millions of lives lost, as a result of abuse. For many years, Safe Passage has sought to make a difference in the lives of Angelenos by providing amazing life transformations.

With these makeovers, Safe Passage is hoping to help heal the emotional and physical wounds these five women have endured. One woman is constantly reminded of the day her ex shot her by the appearance of a large scar where the bullet entered her shoulder. Another woman has burn scars that cover over fifty percent of her body. And still a third has significant facial scarring. These physical injuries are ever-present symbols of the past, which until recently, they relived every time they looked in the mirror.

For the last few weeks the women have undergone their own personal extreme makeovers, on the way to beginning their new lives. On October 2, 2009 between the hours of 12 and 2 PM, these women will finish the last phase of their new transformations at the Giuseppe Franco Salon in Beverly Hills.

To help with these dramatic makeovers, Safe Passage assembled a Dream Team of volunteers. Board-Certified Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Fardad, founder of Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgical Group, and Dr. Bruce Vafa of Smile Angels of Beverly Hills, donated multiple cosmetic, reconstructive and dental surgeries. Actress and exercise coach, Natalie Raitano will be providing ongoing fitness training and maintenance; Giuseppe Franco will provide haircuts and color on the day of the event; and makeup artist Ruby Polanco of NYX Cosmetics will be doing participants’ makeup. Finally, fashions donated by “2 Chicks” will style their new looks. The Miss California Latina and Miss Teen will be inspiring the ladies to walk the walk and talk the talk!

Following these makeovers, the women will be feted and reintroduced to the world at a luncheon given in their honor at Beverly Hills restaurant, Mulberry Pizza Street. According to Keiara, “This is a dream come true and for the first time I know that I am loved. God has sent me Angels from Safe Passage to restore me!”

The experts are equally enthusiastic about the opportunity. “I am honored to work with Safe Passage, and the other volunteers in participating in this life-changing event. These beautiful women have taught us more than we can ever teach them. I cannot wait to see their big reveals,” says Dr. Fardad.

Interested community members can do their part to stop domestic violence by contributing tax deductible donations like: gift certificates, beauty aids, laptop computers and money to Safe Passage or domestic abuse prevention charities like it.

Eight years ago today, one of the most beloved men in New York, Patrick J. Brown, died at the World Trade Center. Captain Brown was the most decorated member of that city's fire department.. He died trying to rescue badly burned civilians.

On the morning of Sept. 11th, enemies of the United States attacked the World Trade Center. Their followers rejoiced, they even danced in the streets. They thought they had achieved success. But they did not.

They made the mistake on the morning of Sept. 11th, when all they saw when they looked at the WTC was 2 buildings. What they failed to see was the nation that stood behind them. What they failed to understand was the terrible resolve they had awakened.

And if there is justice in the afterlife, and I believe there is…..

Those fanatics who crashed those planes into the WTC did NOT get to meet Allah......... They did NOT get 70 virgins. Instead, they met Patrick J. Brown. And they discovered they messed with the wrong Marine.

Because you don’t mess with 3 Truck. You don’t mess with Patty Brown’s guys. Not when he is working.

When Patty first came to 3 Truck, he earned our undying respect when on 2 different occasions tough guys thought they could push Patty or his guys around.. They found out the hard way that Patty was not only a Black Belt in Karate, but also a heck of a Boxer. He was what my father would call----"Good with his hands".

We used to joke around in 3 Truck and tell the officers that they were not ‘in charge’---they were just responsible. Well, we never, even whispered that about Patty, because we all knew he was in charge. And not because he yelled. But because he spoke softly. He was humble. He led by example.

He was bigger than life. Therefore, a simple request from him was like a shouted order from another.

Late at night you could usually find him in the kitchen talking with the guys. He liked to shoot the breeze with the men. It is a testament to his character that with all the famous people he knew; all the mayors that pinned medals on his chest. All the big chiefs that were relieved when they saw his familiar visage enter the fire ground.

That Patty liked nothing better than hanging out with the men. Because Patty never stopped being a fireman. He only cared if you showed enthusiasm, if you were willing to learn. He didn’t care how many medals you had on your chest or how many bars you had on your collar. He only cared about the content of your character.

Guys that had had problems in other houses wanted to come to Ladder 3, not because the Capt. was soft---but because he was strong. He didn’t pre-judge you, he let you prove yourself to him and the great thing about him was---you didn’t want to let him down. We were becoming the Oakland Raiders of the Fire Dept.

And I will tell you this---we loved having him. He was not only a great storyteller; a true raconteur; he was also a great listener. He took tremendous interest in the guys’ lives and well-being. The funny thing is---most of us never realized that in those informal chats that the Capt. was teaching us. That is what he was doing. He was teaching us the Fire Dept. Way, the 3 Truck Way, and most importantly the Patty Brown Way. He was respected and loved because he lived his life so well.

I am reminded of the movie Braveheart when the men saw William Wallace for the first time. It wasn’t much different than when the Capt. First walked through the doors of 3 Truck. It was whispered, "This can’t be the man they call Patty Brown, he is not big enough. Patty Brown is 8 feet tall." Well, he wasn’t that big, but his heart was. That is the burden of being a legend. One that Patty carried with tremendous grace and humility.

To hear the stories and legend of Capt. Brown was to be inspired. But to actually meet the man, to be led by him, to follow him down that long, dark, smoky hallway was to be blessed. Because Patty’s strength, courage, and experience were a tremendous comfort in tough times.

When you went to Capt. with a request or a problem---his usual reply went along the lines of: "Don’t worry, we’ll see what we can do, we’ll take care of it." Anything for the men.

So, I can only imagine that is how it was on those final moments of Sept. 11th. Capt. Brown leading his men. Helping those 30 to 40 severely burned people down those dark stairs.

Patty giving ‘Maydays’ that saved many other firemen’s lives. But he and his men refusing to leave those people behind. I can see the guys from 3 Truck---turning one last time to Patty and being comforted by a nod of his head, a shy smile. "Don’t worry fellas, we’ll take care of it." And they were inspired.

So this marks the 12th, and fina funeral for the men of Ladder 3. And it is fitting that Patty go last. The last man out.

Patty never would have left any building until all his men were out. He couldn’t leave the scene or the firehouse until all his men were cared for. He would even come by on his off days to take care of things for his guys.

So, on behalf of the surviving members of Ladder 3----"You can ‘take up’ now Capt. All your men have been cared for. And they have gone home. You should join them there and rest easy. Any problems that come up----don’t worry, we will take care of them. For you taught us well. You taught us the Patty Brown Way."

Another one: Yesterday my cousin Tim Meier, a Jesuit priest, celebrated his 30th anniversary of sobriety. As some of you know, Tim became a U..S. Army chaplain during his 50th year on earth.. He just came back from Iraq, where he won a Bronze Star. Now he is off to Kosovo as part of a peacekeeping force.

Tim and Paddy did not know each other. But I can guarantee that they would have loved one another.

GOODBYE ROCKY!

These are the best years of our lives, when our wild banshees were still in the house. We are looking at some property in the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. We have loads of kids here all day, everyday. The freezer is full of ice cream, the grill is always ready and the kids are jumping into the pool from the roof, which is the ceiling to my office. It sounds like a herd of elephants over my head. On a daily basis, I have to recommit to my dream of writing this book without being interrupted. But then I look outside and see a butterfly going by and remember how lucky I am surrounded by so much love and laughter.

On Saturday we had to finally say goodbye to our bearded dragon Rocky. He has been a part of our lives for the past 6 years, but my son decided Rocky wasn't happy living alone in a big glass box. The truth is, my son never took him out on a leash and walked him or talked to him or fed him. My husband and I, the grownups, ended up doing everything: feeding Rocky worms and turnip greens, cleaning his 8-foot cage, and petting his head. Rocky really loved classical music and he loved massages. He swayed and danced whenever I turned the classical station on. And when I called his name from afar, he would perk up and look right at me.

Here are his goodbye pictures. We dropped him off at ECO Station, the wildlife tropical waystation that is home to a menagerie of exotic birds and reptiles. I know a parrot there named Guacamole. He's a flirt.

SOME GOOD ADVICE

The chaos is part of the picture. Stop trying to fix the results. Stop trying to determine the results. Your test is to stand in your own truth. Don’t let “them” -- the outer world, the material insanity, the naysayers, tell you you can’t do what seems impossible, what you know is right. Don’t let anyone say you can't do something. 1. The US Military and veterans Administration as fine examples of single payer health care.  2. Medicare and Medicaid are examples of single payer health care insurance.

3. Congress is an example of the finest health care in the country, and its single payer.   Which one or ones are you against?

At a recent meeting of leading faith groups in Washington, D.C., a leader of a large, national organization said they were receiving calls asking if the elderly would be simply left to die if health-care reform passed. The answer is NO.

These egregious and false accusations are being created for only one purpose: to manipulate and instill fear in American citizens.

This must stop. We are the ones who can stop it. Together, speaking out, acting out, and joining as one on a mission, we can push back the clouds of misinformation and fear-mongering, and allow the light of truth shine through.

Today, right now, let’s join together making the health-care debate factual, worthy of our families and communities. Let’s put the special interests on notice that we want real health-care reform, not misinformation and fear-mongering.

The other day I woke up, reached over and started petting our little rescue dog Sasha, on her smooth belly. She sleeps on her back, and usually ends up in the middle of my husband and me, like a child under the covers. (When we first got her, I woke up and she had her head on the pillow; she was staring into my eyes, with her head was sticking out from the covers like a little child.

Anyway, on this particular morning, just before dawn, it was hazy but I could see her longish tan torso/tummy and I felt the back of her skinny little legs which were extended. I kept rubbing her smooth belly and then I panicked. She wasn't moving or breathing.

I said, "Paul - wake up! Sasha isn't moving. I think you're smothering her! I kept pulling her torso out from under my husband. It seemed as if her head was under his armpit and all I could feel was her belly. I kept pulling, trying to pull her out from under him, when I heard a bark from the end of the bed. It was Sasha barking at me. Who was I petting then? Suddenly it became clear that I had been "petting" my husband's inner arm the whole time! The inner arm was smooth and the outer sides had hair, so I just assumed it was the dog -- and in the haze his arm was just her size.

What I thought were her hind legs, were actually my husband's fingers. YOU HAD TO BE THERE! I still can't stop laughing about this!

Living Wealth

If we are to slow and ultimately reverse the social and environmental disintegration we see around us, we must change the rules to curb the pervasive abuse of corporate power that contributes so much to those harms. Taming corporate power will slow the damage. It will not be sufficient, however, to heal our relationships with one another and the Earth and bring our troubled world into social and environmental balance. Corporations are but instruments of a deeper social pathology revealed in a familiar story our society tells about the nature of prosperity.

Empire Prosperity Story

The prevailing prosperity narrative has many variations, but these are among its essential elements:
* Economic growth fills our lives with material abundance, lifts the poor from their misery, and creates the wealth needed to protect the environment.
* Money is the measure of wealth and the proper arbiter of every choice and relationship.
* Prosperity depends on freeing wealthy investors from taxes and regulations that limit their incentive and capacity to invest in creating the new jobs that enrich us all.
* Unregulated markets allocate resources to their most productive and highest value use.
* The wealthy deserve their riches because we all get richer as the benefits of the investments of those on top trickle down to those on the bottom.
* Poverty is caused by welfare programs that strip the poor of motivation to become productive members of society willing to work hard at the jobs the market offers.

This money-serving prosperity story is repeated endlessly by corporate media and taught in economics, business, and public policy courses in our colleges and universities almost as sacred writ. I call it the Empire prosperity story.

Few notice the implications of its legitimation of the power and privilege of for-profit corporations and an economic system designed to maximize returns to money, that is, to make rich people richer. Furthermore, it praises extreme individualism that, in other circumstances would be condemned as sociopathic; values life only as a commodity; and diverts our attention from the basic reality that destroying life to make money is an act of collective insanity. In addition to destroying real wealth, it threatens our very survival as a species.

Earth Community Prosperity Story

Consider these elements of a contrasting life-serving prosperity story that looks to life, rather than money, as the true measure of wealth.

* Healthy children, families, communities, and ecological systems are the true measure of real wealth.
* Mutual caring and support are the primary currency of healthy families and communities, and community is the key to economic security.
* Real wealth is created by investing in the human capital of productive people, the social capital of caring relationships, and the natural capital of healthy ecosystems.
* The end of poverty and the healing of the environment will come from reallocating material resources from rich to poor and from life-destructive to life-nurturing uses.
* Markets have a vital role, but democratically accountable governments must secure community interests by assuring that everyone plays by basic rules that internalize costs, maintain equity, and favor human-scale local businesses that honor community values and serve community needs.
* Economies must serve and be accountable to people, not the reverse.

I call this the Earth Community prosperity story because it evokes a vision of the possibility of creating life-serving economies grounded in communities that respect the irreducible interdependence of people and nature. Although rarely heard, this story is based on familiar notions of generosity and fairness, and negates each of the claims of the imperial prosperity story that currently shapes economic policy and practice.

The High Cost of Making Money

It took me many years in my work abroad as a member of the foreign aid establishment to wake up to the fallacy of the Empire story-the idea that advancing economic growth by maximizing returns to money is the key to ending poverty and healing the environment. The epiphany came during a conference in Asia at which nongovernmental organizations were presenting case studies of the social and environmental consequences of large aid-funded development projects undertaken to promote economic growth. In case after case, the projects displaced poor people and disrupted essential environmental processes to produce benefits for those already better off.

Eventually I came to realize that conventional economic growth indicators rarely measure growth in human prosperity. Rather, they measure the rate at which the rich are expropriating the living resources of the planet and converting them to products destined for a garbage dump after a brief useful life. The process generates profits for people who already have far more money than they need while displacing people from the resources they need for their modest livelihoods. In summary, the primary business of the global financial system and the corporations that serve it is to increase the wealth gap. It works well in the short-term for the privileged few, but it is disastrous for the society.

We see the effects in the current state of the world. The market value of global economic output has tripled since 1970. By conventional reckoning, this means we humans have tripled our wealth and well-being.

Yet indicators of living capital, the aggregate of human, social and natural capital, tell a very different story. The Living Planet Index, an indicator of the health of the world’s freshwater, ocean, and land-based ecosystems, declined 30 percent since 1970. According to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 15 of 24 ecosystem services examined “are being degraded or used unsustainably, including fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water purification, and the regulation of regional and local climate, natural hazards, and pests.”

Indicators of human capital-the skills, knowledge, psychological health, capacity for critical thought, and moral responsibility characteristic of the fully functioning person, and of social capital-the enduring relationships of mutual trust and caring that are the foundation of healthy families, communities and societies-point to equally unfavorable trends.

Even as living capital shrinks, the population that depends on it continues to grow. Meanwhile, the growing concentration of money means a few people are able to claim an ever-larger share of a shrinking pie of living capital to the exclusion of everyone else. According to a recent United Nations study, the richest 2 percent of the world’s adults own 51 percent of all global assets. The poorest 50 percent own only 1 percent. This distribution of ownership is a measure of the global distribution of power-and the gap is growing at an accelerating rate. The power imbalance allows the privileged minority to change the rules to accelerate their expropriation of the declining pool of real wealth, which increases the hardship and desperation of those excluded. We are on a path to an increasingly violent last-one-standing competition for the Earth’s final tree, drop of drinkable water, and breath of air.

By our measures of financial capital, we humans are on a path to limitless prosperity. By the measures of living capital, we are on a suicidal path to increasing deprivation and ultimate self-extinction.

Putting Life First

If there is to be a human future, we must bring ourselves into balanced relationship with one another and the Earth. This requires turning existing economic priorities and models on their head and making the values of the Earth Community story the foundation of our economy. We must:

1. Turn from money to life as the defining value, from growing financial capital to growing living capital, and from short-term to long-term investing;
2. Shift the priority from advancing the private interests of the few to advancing the individual and community interests of all; and
3. Reallocate resources from supporting institutions of domination to meeting the needs of people, community, and nature.

We have enormous potential to improve the lives of all by reallocating resources from military to health care and environmental regeneration, from automobiles to public transportation, from investing in suburban sprawl to investing in compact communities, from advertising to education, from financial speculation to productive investment in local entrepreneurship, and from providing extravagant luxuries for the very wealthy to providing basic essentials for everyone.

The champions of Empire dismiss any such reordering of priorities on the ground that it will bring economic disaster and unbearable hardship. They ignore the simple fact that those results are already the lot of roughly half our fellow humans. The proposed reordering can avoid the spread of hardship and begin to alleviate the existing suffering.

Economic reallocation and democratization are no longer simply moral issues. They are imperatives of human survival and must replace economic growth and the pursuit of financial gain as the defining purpose of economic life.

The work of bringing forth a new economy devoted to serving the needs of our children, families, communities, and natural environments begins with building public awareness that there is an Earth Community prosperity story that offers a vision of hope and possibility for a positive future. Although a story so contrary to the prevailing Empire story is likely to be greeted with initial skepticism, the Earth Community prosperity story enjoys the ultimate advantage because it expresses the truth most of us recognize in our hearts: if our children, families, communities, and natural systems are healthy, we are prosperous. Whether conventional financial indicators like GDP or the Dow Jones stock index rise or fall is irrelevant.

Rules for Conserving and Sharing

To get from where we are to where we need to go we must recognize that the market is an essential and beneficial institution for allocating resources in response to individual choices. But it is beneficial only so long as it operates by rules that maintain equity and competition and require players to internalize the social and environmental costs of their choices. And it is not sacred. Without responsible governmental oversight, the market can lead to highly destructive social pathology.

By its nature, the market creates winners and losers. Furthermore, the winners are often those most skilled in finding ways to pass social and environmental costs onto others. The winners increase their share of the resource pie, which increases their economic and political power to shape markets and rules to improve their future prospects. The result is a self-reinforcing spiral of increasing concentration of wealth and power. This supports the unjust hoarding and profligate consumption of resources by a privileged class. In an increasingly environmentally constrained world, learning to conserve and share resources is an essential requirement of social order and well-being.

Even with adequate regulation to minimize social and environmental abuse, the health of a market system also requires public intervention to recycle financial capital continuously from winners to losers. In the absence of such recycling, financial wealth and power accumulate in perpetuity, increasing the fortunes of a few family dynasties at the expense of democracy, justice, and social stability.

Recycling financial wealth to maintain a democratic allocation of access to real resources is, of course, totally contrary to the self-serving logic of corporate capitalism. Yet it is essential to democracy and social health, both of which depend on an equitable distribution of power, and an essential function of democratic government.

Community-based Economics

From a system-design perspective, a healthy society must either eliminate profit, interest, and for-profit corporations altogether, or use the taxing and regulatory powers of publicly accountable democratic governments to strictly limit concentrations of economic power and prevent the winners from passing the costs of their success onto the losers. This creates yet another system design issue. As government becomes larger and more powerful, it almost inevitably becomes less accountable and more prone to corruption.

Paul Hawken has correctly observed that big business creates the need for big government to constrain excesses and clean up the messes. To maintain equity and secure the internalization of costs, democratically accountable government power must exceed the power of exclusive private economic interests. The smaller the concentrations of economic power, the smaller government can be and still maintain essential balance and integrity in the society.

There will be less need for a strong governmental hand to the extent that we are successful in eliminating sociopathic institutional forms, making community-based economies the norm, and creating a public consensus that predatory economic behavior now taken for granted as “just human nature” is actually aberrant and immoral. Responsible citizenship may then become the expected business norm. There will always be a need, however, for rules and governmental oversight to deal with what hopefully will be a declining number of sociopathic individuals and institutions who seek to profit at public expense.
Equalizing economic power and rooting it locally shifts power to people and community from distant financial markets, global corporations, and national governments. It serves to shift rewards from economic predators to economic producers, strengthens community, encourages individual responsibility, and allows for greater expression of individual choice and creativity.

The Essential Choice

The human species has reached a defining moment of choice between moving ahead on a path to collective self-destruction or joining together in a cooperative effort to navigate a dramatic turn to a new human era. The profound cultural and institutional transformation that is needed goes up against the short-term interests of the world’s most powerful people and institutions. The barriers to what we humans must now achieve are daunting. By any rational calculation, the needed transformation is not politically feasible. Yet it is essential to human survival and prosperity, which means we must set ourselves to the task of figuring out how to make the impossible into the inevitable.

Some of my ideas:

1. Cars should be made of fur; there would be less fatal traffic accidents. Think about it. A fluffy furry foam shell with no metal parts, except the engine. It could be waterproof. Why not?

2. We should desalinate the oceans, at least the Pacific in Southern California, which is suffering a severe drought and water rationing. We are not allowed to water our lawns on certain days. If we invest in desalination plants, we will create jobs and fresh water, as a bonus, we'll help curb the rising tides due to global warming. Maybe it sounds wacky but if we are using vast amounts of ocean water, won't that help balance the melting ice caps from overflowing and flooding? At least a little bit?

3. We should have water pipelines from the Northeast states where they have too much rainfall. The pipelines would carry excess rainfall down to Nevada and California during drought season.

4. We need to create Green companies and new energies right now, which will create jobs. Solar panels on all businesses and grocery stores, as in Germany. They will receive tax subsidies for this. Wind, solar.

Why can't these things be implemented now? Also, if we allocated 2% of our GDP for public education and Universal Medicare, we'd all be covered.

Health Care is a National Security issue, a safety issue and a basic human right. It should not be for profit. GET STRONG OBAMA! Stay true to your promises, the way Ted Kennedy would. He was a true public servant in that he put the PEOPLE who have no voice first; not the ruling elite.

QUESTION:
Which of these socialistic (socialism) programs should we eliminate?

This is Socialism: Police Force, Fire Dept., Military, Veterans Dept., Clean Water, Public Highways, Public Parks. Medicare, Social Security are all government run for the protection and and rights of the PEOPLE, who run the Government. Which one of these vital programs should we get rid of?

It is immoral and un-Christian to make a profit off of cancer, illness or basic health care. We are the only country in the world that does not take care of its people and puts corporate billionaires ahead of the middle class.

THE gun-carrying "patriots" WHO SHOUT AT TOWNHALL MEETINGS HAVE NO IDEA THAT THEY ARE HELPING THEIR ENEMIES -- the INSURANCE COMPANIES like AIG!

Did you know the billionaire insurance companies are PAYING PEOPLE TO PROTEST THE TRUTH AT THESE TOWNHALL MEETINGS? THEY ARE USING YOU TO DO THEIR LOBBYING!! And what I find quite disturbing, is they pay their CEOs $30-50 billion dollars a year in salaries.

This is a violation of our rights — of our children's right to feel safe. Your "right" to own a gun does not mean you can bring it to public events, or wear it the frightening thing hanging off your body, where any angry psycho, including yourself, can grab it. It's far too easy to use a gun on a human being. I am ashamed and embarrased to have these as my fellow Americans and everyone should be ashamed of the current Republican party, it's leaders and politicians for taking bribes and payments from the Big Insurance companies to DENY the middle class free basic health care and for condoning LIES, RACISM AND HATE-SPEAK. And for inflaming the angry mob into believing outrageous lies about our president who simply wants to help create a FREE HEALTH CARE system FOR THE working MIDDLE CLASS!!

What on earth is wrong with you people?

You can't be pro-life and against universal health care. If you are, then you are being brainwashed by liars. Fox "News" and Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh take home *$45 million a year in salary. Is it because you don't realize the word "Christ" is the root of the word "Christianity" because the vowel sounds are different? Dear President Obama: A Modest Medicare Proposal

Dear President Obama,

I understand you're thinking of dumping your "public option" because of all the demagoguery by Sarah Palin and Dick Armey and Newt Gingrich and their crowd on right-wing radio and Fox. Fine. Good idea, in fact.

Instead, let's make it simple. Please let us buy into Medicare.

It would be so easy. You don't have to reinvent the wheel with this so-called "public option" that's a whole new program from the ground up. Medicare already exists. It works. Some people will like it, others won't - just like the Post Office versus FedEx analogy you're so comfortable with.

Just pass a simple bill - it could probably be just a few lines, like when Medicare was expanded to include disabled people - that says that any American citizen can buy into the program at a rate to be set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which reflects the actual cost for us to buy into it.

So it's revenue neutral!

To make it available to people of low income, raise the rates slightly for all currently non-eligible people (like me - under 65) to cover the cost of below-200%-of-poverty people. Revenue neutral again.

Most of us will do damn near anything to get out from under the thumbs of the multi-millionaire CEOs who are running our current insurance programs. Sign me up!

This lets you blow up all the rumors about death panels and grandma and everything else: everybody knows what Medicare is. Those who scorn it can go with Blue Cross. Those who like it can buy into it. Simplicity itself.

Of course, we'd like a few fixes, like letting Medicare negotiate drug prices and filling some of the holes Republicans and AARP and the big insurance lobbyists have drilled into Medicare so people have to buy "supplemental" insurance, but that can wait for the second round. Let's get this done first.

Simple stuff. Medicare for anybody who wants it. Private health insurance for those who don't. Easy message. Even Max Baucus and Chuck Grassley can understand it. Sarah Palin can buy into it, or ignore it. No death panels, no granny plugs, nothing. Just a few sentences.

Replace the "you must be disabled or 65" with "here's what it'll cost if you want to buy in, and here's the sliding scale of subsidies we'll give you if you're poor, paid for by everybody else who's buying in." (You could roll back the Reagan tax cuts and make it all free, but that's another rant.)

We elected you because we expected you to have the courage of your convictions. Here's how. Not the "single payer Medicare for all" that many of us would prefer, but a simple, "Medicare for anybody who wants to buy in."

After listening to Glen Beck, one man in PA murdered 3 Police officers in cold blood because he was all hyped up on FEAR. Guess who got him this way? Glen Beck kept screaming on his CNN TV show these kinds of LIES: "Obama's gonna take your guns!" WHERE DID HE GET THIS? WHY DID HE MAKE THIS UP? President Obama never said he was going to take away anyone's guns.

Look at my son Jack, on my birthday. He refused to smile and was embarrassed to sit next to me in case his friends saw him. Check out his crooked half smile in every pic... Hilarious!

Birthday with the family at Islands. The other kids (which includes hubby) were sitting opposite us. Went to see HARRY POTTER after dinner. The kids refused to go, but I LOVED THE NEW HARRY POTTER!! I'm a geek, what can I say? Love fantasy, magic, horror and sci fi. Now I see a resemblance between RUPERT GRINT AND MICK JAGGER as far as sex appeal goes! I couldn't se how Hermoine wouldn't be more attracted to Harry Potter, but Rupert is SEXY!! Draco Malfoy is positively sinister. And I adored Jim Broadbent, one of my favorite actors. So funny!

Now I'm reading the 7th Harry Potter book THE DEATHLY HALLOWS.

I am so sick of cleavage! But I can't quit cold turkey. I'm not spiritually evolved enough yet to stop dressing like a hooker, but I did try on a turtleneck the other day. You can't get a job in this town without "lap dancer" on your resume, and I'm referring to the writers, not the actors.

Ran into so many old friends, flames and great stars like Don Most, Rosanna Arquette, Shannon Doherty, Kathy Najimy, Kristy Swanson, Angie Everhart, Tanya Roberts...and of course my big swiss, Deborah Van Valkenburgh.

Jack Riley was one of our favorite guest stars on Too Close for Comfort.

Bill Dailey has always been a favorite since "I DREAM OF JEANIE" days! We got to talk for about 3o minutes. He has an amazing life in New Mexico and directs theater there.

One of my favorite people is Rosanna Arquette. I got to say hi and she was so sweet, but I wish I had told her how much I adore her.

Saw the gorgeous Bond Girls Maud Adams and Tanya Roberts.

Kristy Swanson is also a favorite (the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") Richard Kiel was there, and all the Jasons from Friday the 13th, including my old friend Warrington Gillette :) Good to see you Warrington. I have fond memories of Aspen! But I don't really remember that much, since those were the wild days of lost brain cells.

My favorite Twilight Zone and Star Trek guest star WARREN STEVENS sat right to my left. He is so amazing, so brilliant. His wife was named Lydia and he has some great sons. I wish I could have stayed and just visited with all the stars, but we couldn't leave our tables. I used to do these shows and never get to walk around.

SOBER FEMMES RECOVERY CENTER FUNDRAISER July 11 in North Hollywood

On Saturday night, July 11, Lydia hosted the First Sober Femmes Fundraiser for Unit A Recovery Center in Burbank, California. Cornell is a women and children’s advocate, and an inspirational speaker on teen suicide prevention — as well as on drug and alcohol abuse.

Sober for fourteen years, Cornell found her younger brother’s body after a drug overdose, and speaks to recovery groups of up to 300 or more. She is a mother of tweenagers.

She also speaks at schools, colleges, hospitals and women’s groups about her experiences in overcoming loss, tragedy, unemployment, sexism, ageism, depression, self-sabotage, obnoxious teenagers — and every imaginable hardship. Her talks are laced with poignant stories of transformation with an innate sense of comic timing. “If you can laugh at yourself you probably won’t kill yourself.”

People may be sick of hearing about celebrities are in recovery, but as Dr. Drew Pinsky of Celebrity Rehab says, “Addiction is the disease of our time.” Alcohol is the number one drug of choice among teens in America. Young people are in crisis; girls ages 10-15 have the lowest self-esteem and highest rate of suicide attempts of any other group. Add to this the fact that over 85% of violent crime is alcohol and drug related, and we have an epidemic — yet this is rarely mentioned in media reports.

What would cause a once-gifted child to drink to excess, and to risk the life of her own child?

No one ever talks about the hidden element, the most vital element of recovery, which is often ignored in mainstream TV and press. And no one asks the root question: why is everyone in rehab? What breed of person comes to Hollywood seeking the adoration of strangers? Wanting to be famous is an American malaise.

Cornell does not mince words. She has experienced true miracles in sobriety, but people rarely delve into this crucial aspect of 12-step programs. “It’s not enough to put down the drug or drink; once you put down the ‘spirits’ you have to fill the void with a lasting peace. You have to go out in the world and live your life with joy,” Cornell writes.

Cornell answers some hard questions about celebrity and why so many kill themselves with drugs and alcohol — from someone who has not only been there herself, but who lost friends and loved ones. But Cornell overcomes the universal urge to blame others and play the victim. As Michael Jackson said, “It all starts with the man in the mirror.” Or in the words of Stuart Smalley, “It's easier to wear slippers than to carpet the whole world.”

I BLINKED AND MY KIDS WERE IN PUBERTY

This is before the blink... when they were sweet:

I blinked and my kids were in puberty. I was too busy for a few minutes and they went from being sweet 10 and 11 year olds to obnoxious jerks!! I wish I had savored the sweet phase a little longer.

Regarding Sarah Palin, I think maybe she woke up in the nick of time and realized her blind ambition was destroying her family.

I am viewing her decision as a mother would. With so many people in the public eye dying lately, it brings home the point that life is too short to waste a moment at a job you despise if it is taking you away from your children and the things you love. I believe a parent with a stressful job can ruin children's lives more than being unemployed. I would rather do with less, and spend quality time with my family — than work long hours earning a lot of money. Time is not replaceable, nor is peace of mind and health.

At Max's Barmitzvah. Everyone is 13, except for me. I'm 12.

Charity King: Michael Jackson Holds Guiness World Record

I have always adored Michael Jackson and want to mention that he was in the As the world continues to mourn the loss of a great artist, the Basham and Cornell Radio Show! Guiness World Record book remembers Michael Jackson instead as the king of charity.

The Millenium issue listed the music legend under Most Charities Supported By A Pop Star, with a staggering 39 international organizations including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the American Cancer Society. Those are only the known ones however, as Jackson was also prone to giving away impulsively and anonymously.

Jackson had been known to hand over the proceeds from concerts to local charities and hospitals as he did with the History tour in Bombay, or donate personal items for auction to organisations like UNESCO. It’s been estimated he may have given up to $500 million to charity in his lifetime.
