SPY VS. LIE: OUTING VALERIE PLAME AN ACT OF TREASON?

Guest Post by Bartlebee

We hear a lot of talk about patriots these days. In fact the word is literally used "left and right" to describe all sorts of people from politicians to pundits. One person you won't hear the term attributed to however, at least by the right wing in this country, is Valerie Plame

And here's why.

Valerie Plame first entered the world in 1963, the daughter of a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force. In fact, she was born on a US Air Force Base — Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska. Her father was not only a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force, but worked for the National Security Agency for about three years when Valerie was young, giving Valerie her first look at the clandestine world of national intelligence, and no doubt helped shape her future career plans, which involved one thing and one thing only.

Serving her country.

A career choice Ms. Plame was well suited to, given her superior intellect and skills not to mention remarkable good looks which are no doubt an asset in the clandestine world. In 1985 Valerie was accepted into the CIA's Officer training program, and never looked back. She was installed as a Non Official Cover Officer which is the most clandestine role the CIA has to offer. As a covert operative who speaks 4 languages, assignments took her to Greece, Iraq, Turkey and parts of Europe. She worked to protect US officials including George H W Bush during his visit to Greece, whose native tongue is included in her repertoire of languages. Plame was a rising star in the CIA with a BA from Penn State, and not one but two Masters degrees, one from London School of Economics and Political Science, and one from The College of Europe, in Belgium. Plame speaks English, German, French and Greek and is an expert in nuclear anti-proliferation.

Then, in 2003, it all came to a screeching halt.

ry 2002 the CIA asked Joe Wilson, Valerie Plame's husband, to travel to Niger to confirm the validity of a report of that Iraq had an agreement to purchase Uranium from Niger to be used by Saddam Hussein to manufacture nuclear weapons. Wilson traveled to Niger, met with the former Prime Minister who was the one approached by "an Iraqi businessman" who discussed strengthening trade agreements with Niger. Wilson researched the events and concluded there was nothing there and reported back to the Select Committee on Intelligence that the accusations of a sales agreement between Niger and Iraq was clearly false.

However in January 2003, President George W Bush announced in his State of the Union address, the opposite, with these 16 immortal words; "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa". Naturally Wilson was astounded that the President presented this information to the world as fact, even after Wilson had reported almost a year earlier to the Senate Select Intelligence Committee that the story was false.

This bothered Wilson, and on July 6, 2003, Wilson wrote in a New York Times Op-Ed piece that Bush had misrepresented the intelligence and wrongly used it to help justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Although several committees including the Butler Report, the Senate Intelligence Commission and the Senate Select Committee on intelligence at various times attempted to disprove Wilson's conclusions, none were ever able to produce any solid evidence to validate the claims that a sales agreement for Yellow Cake existed between Iraq and Niger, or that it was ever discussed with the former Prime Minister of Niger, Ibrahim Hassane Mayaki. In fact the US State Dept agreed with Wilson, as did the CIA, that the claims were false and thus discredited.

Eight days after writing his Op Ed piece reprimanding the White House for using the discredited information, his wife, and covert CIA operative, Valerie Elise Plame Wilson, was outed as a CIA Covert Operative, in a column in the New York Times titled, "Mission to Niger".

And just like that, her career as a CIA covert operative, was blown.

In Sept 2003, President Bush stated that if there had been a leak, then he would prosecute anyone in his administration found guilty of such a leak. The CIA had already contacted the Justice Dept. to request a formal investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of classified intelligence in leaking Plames status to the press. Then, in February 2004, Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed as Special Counsel to lead the investigation. During the investigation Fitzgerald filed papers naming Karl Rove and Scooter Libby as the primary leaker's of the information to the press, and not just to Bob Novak. However during the investigation Rove and Libby stonewalled, lied and did whatever they could to obscure and obstruct the facts of the investigation, most often resorting to age old "I don't recall" to avoid prosecution.

Fitzgerald knew Rove had leaked the information, as did Libby, but their diversionary testimonies and stonewalling made it impossible for Fitzgerald to prove it. Then on October 28, 2005, Libby was charged a 5 count indictment for lying to the Special Prosecutor Perjury and Obstruction of Justice. Libby, Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff, following his indictments, resigned in disgrace, and on March 6, 2007, he was found guilty of all but one of the indictments, and sentenced to 30 months in prison. a 250,000 dollar fine, and 2 years probation. President Bush immediately intervened, and overruled the courts ruling, granting Libby Clemency, and thus discarding the justice process.

Libby never denied that he learned of Plame's identity from Vice President Cheney, and thus while the Grand Jury's commission was expired and Fitzgerald returned to his "day job", the investigation is by no means over. But what we know is this. Rove and Libby leaked Plames identity, to discredit her husband Joe Wilson's report to the Senate Select Intelligence Committee to sell the war in Iraq to the American people and the Congress. This act alone would be enough for all but the most deluded of Bush followers, to abandon him as a traitor to the country. But the right wing has staved off a mass exodus by claiming over and over, that Plame "never was a covert op", which of course is a lie. Court records filed during the Libby hearing, and subsequent CIA information proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Plame was indeed covert and working on several clandestine anti-nuclear proliferation operations, including providing Iran with bogus data on the construction of nuclear weapons. But the right wing ignores this information, and continues to smear Plame, her husband, and her 20 year career as a covert CIA operative.

But tonight, on CBS's 60 Minutes, Katie Couric interviews Valerie Plame for the first time since her cover was blown by the Bush administration. In the interview, Couric will outline some of the actual damage done to the CIA, their long term covert operations, and the absolute danger the outing has placed numerous CIA covert operatives around the Globe. Couric will report how the day the Novak story came out, embassy's all over the world began frantically researching to see if the stealthy Mrs Plame had entered their country, and who she had contacted during her visits. Intelligence agencies began investigations all over the world to determine the extent of Mrs Plames activities and the persons associated with those activities, thus compromising potentially dozens of CIA covert operations and potentially hundreds of CIA covert operatives around the globe. We will hear how the work she performed was actually designed to stop Iran from ever developing nuclear technology, and thus averting the threats that President Bush claims to be so utterly concerned with. We will learn, how a President, and his staff, caused the country to be placed in greater threat from nuclear war, simply because they wanted to invade the nation of Iraq.

So with all the talk of patriotism and patriots that we hear from the right, tonight, CBS news, and Katie Couric, will give the world a birds eye view of an actual Patriot. One who dedicated her entire adult life to her country, and to keeping it safe from nuclear weapons. And we will hear first hand how the President who cries so loudly about his fear of those nuclear weapons in the hands of countries like Iran, destroyed the operations the CIA had worked so hard to develop, to keep those nuclear weapons from countries like Iran. And perhaps more importantly we'll get a keen glimpse into the tactics and strategy of the right wing Bush supporters, and their never ending efforts to provide lies and misdirection to real questions and real issues.

Thanks to Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation we know that both the President's and Vice President's Chiefs of Staff were the source of the leaks, which implicates the President and the Vice President as their source. If it had been just one Chief of Staff working alone, then perhaps one could argue it was a solitary self motivated effort. But both Chiefs of staff along with the White House Press Secretary and the Deputy Secretary of State indicate that it was not a solitary effort, but a combined, decisive attempt to smear two American Patriots, and in doing so, they destroyed years worth of highly classified work that was designed to keep America safe from nuclear threats, something the President claims is his primary goal. And since the right wing knows that most Americans know that Bush and Cheney were the original sources of the leak, their strategy has changed over the last year to discredit the notion that Valerie Plame was a covert operative. But in just one short hour, their collective denial of "Yes they did it, but she wasn't a covert op and her job wasn't classified, so therefore no crime was committed, no harm was done" is about to be dismantled once and for all.

Tonight the entire country will learn what only the educated and informed blogger's and web surfers are currently aware of. That Valerie Plame was indeed a covert operative, and that her work was not only highly classified, but was designed to keep the one thing from happening that George W Bush claims is the primary reason he was willing to invade Iraq and cost us so much in American lives and treasure and commit so much destruction of a people that has never once attacked us, and the reason he is now threatening to attack yet another country, and butcher a few hundred thousand more people and turn the entire global community against us. Her work, was to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of countries like Iran and Iraq. And George W Bush, and Dick Cheney, destroyed that work for their own purposes and ruined the 20 year career of a covert CIA officer who's classified mission was to do precisely what George W Bush claims is his number one goal, and the reason he's using to blow the middle east back to the stone age.

Tonight we'll see a true American Patriot, who works for one of the most patriotic organizations this country has, the unsung heroes of the CIA, who's mission is to stop wars before they get started. Tonight we'll see what the crowd "calling" themselves Patriots, do to the actual Patriots of our country. Tonight we'll see why this Patriot, who dedicated 20 years of her life to serving her country in an organization where accolades are given only in secret, and medals are seen only by the recipient, had her career and work destroyed by the President and Vice President. To sell their lousy war. A war that if they had only let the CIA do their jobs, would never need to have been fought.
-----------------------------
UPDATE: Katie Couric introduced the story this evening by pointing out that Valerie Plame was no "glorified secretary" as the Bush administration and the right wing have falsely labeled her. Couric announced unequivocally that Plame was not only a covert op, but an officer, in charge of "dozens of agents" and a highly classified operation to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The 60 Minutes Interview has just aired. For those of you who missed it you can catch recaps and excerpts here on CBS's website.

  • I hope to dear God that the report will finally lead to impeachment hearings -- first aganst Vice-Fuhrer Herr Cheney and then Dubble-dum Bush.

Or perhaps, if there isnt time to impeach Bush before the election - a nice big fat criminal case. See how he likes to swagger around in an orange jumpsuit ... and since he likes screwing people so much, we'll see how he likes being screwed by somebody who looks like Jabba the Hut.

It'll never happen of course -- Pelosi will just let it ride and Bush will either withdraw from public eye after the election and attempt to rewrite history or use an attack on Iran as an excuse to declare martial law and cancel the election

I think it will MCH. You can rest assured that over the next few weeks, this interview will be front and center on political news shows and talk shows.

The right wings argument changed a while back, as the Fitzgerald court filings came out, and we learned that he believed that Karl Rove and Scooter Libby were the leakers and were fairly obviously acting on their bosses behalf. Richard Armitage fell on his sword so to speak, but the real leak, the origination of it, came from Bush and Cheney. Cheney probably first.

And if the congress does grow some balls, or at least is forced to grow some balls, they'll likley go for Cheney first.

But if it doesn't happen, you can bet that once a democrat takes office, and appoints a real AG, then this case will come back front and center, because the DOJ doesn't take treason lightly.

At least the DOJ run by a real AG.

  • This story is not going away anything soon, and this investigation into who leaked her identity and why is far from over.

Once the country understands the actual damage done to the country, that the right wing has been trying to play down for the last few years, then public outcry is going to be deafening.

Once people learn that it wasn't just Valerie Plame who suffered here, but it was the CIA's plans to keep Iran from obtaining nukes, and everyone she ever worked with, then people are going to "get it".

  • 2 hours ago, the Vice President decided to make this press release, right before the CBS story aired about Valerie Plame.

Cheney: US will not let Iran go nuclear

    MATTHEW BARAKAT,
    Associated Press Writer
    2 hours, 54 minutes ago
    LEESBURG, Va. -

The United States and other nations will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

"Our country, and the entire international community, cannot stand by as a terror-supporting state fulfills its grandest ambitions," Cheney said in a speech to the Washington Institute for Near East Studies.

If Iran continues on its current course, Cheney said the U.S. and other nations are "prepared to impose serious consequences."

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:16 PM

  • So are we seeing the irony yet?

Cheney is ready to go to war for what he claims is to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons,

But he outed a CIA covert operative who's Classified, Covert Operation was to keep Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:19 PM

  • I said that Pelosi should give the Decider a blow job than maybe she could put impeachment back on the table.

I called her office again and told her to shut up about Stark since 80 % of Americans agreed with him.

    God Bless.

By Blogger Anon-Paranoid, at 5:34 PM

  • For years the trolls have been mocking Plame, and us for being upset that her identity was leaked.

Volt, TT, all of them, claimed she never was a covert agent, but merely a "glorified secretary".

Well don't they look stupid now.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:41 PM

  • Cheney and Bush now have bigger things to worry about than getting impeached.

After tonights CBS story, they're going to have all they can do to to keep out of JAIL.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:46 PM

  • From ThinkProgress.org

    Gonzales may face criminal charges.

At a speech on Friday, ousted U.S. attorney John McKay revealed that the “U.S. Inspector General may recommend criminal prosecution of departed Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at the conclusion of an investigation, possibly as early as next month.”

  • No wonder Cheney's beating the war drum tonight.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:50 PM

  • >>Well don't they look stupid now.>>

    Now???

By Blogger MCH, at 5:51 PM

  • I guess Katie Couric's no longer welcome at the White House corrospondents dinner, after tonights interview.

And just think. Up until yesterday she was the "sweetheart of the right wing".

    Oh Katie how you've fallen.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:52 PM

  • Good point MCH, but this story on CBS tonight just mauled them.

    And I mean MAULED.

Did you see the interview? Incredible stuff.

It wasn't one of those "Plame CLAIMS she was a covert op".

It was "CBS has discovered that Plame WAS a covert op, who was leading and working on a HIGHLY CLASSIFIED operation"

It was not presented as a maybe. It was presented as irrefutable fact. Which moves Katie Couric up a few rungs on the investigative journalism ladder.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:55 PM

  • Couric also made it clear that the leak came from the White House, and that Cheney was clearly at the forefront, even going so far as to show Cheney's own handwriting on the newspaper article written by Joe Wilson, outlining various ways to smear him.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:57 PM

  • Nope -- wasnt able to watch it but I do look forward to seeing the fallout

By Blogger MCH, at 6:16 PM

  • Well I wish you had seen it. You'd know how utterly damning it was.

I provided a link on the cover story to the CBS page where they hae excerpts and lots of video clips of the interview and even some other interviews, like Katie Couric being interviewed ABOUT the interview.

    This ones big. REAL big.

The interview made it clear that other covert operatives were exposed by this, and even alluded to the notion that someone may have been physically hurt because of the leak.

I guess I'll have to look at Katie Couric a little differently after tonight. She's come a long way from her "Navy seals are cool" days.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 6:26 PM

  • Yep -- saw the video clips and read the report. That's damaging stuff ... I imagine Flush Limbaugh and Bill "The Loufah" O'Reilly will have a field day with her tomorrow

By Blogger MCH, at 6:50 PM

  • I don't see how.

Anyone attacking her now, after this story, is going to look like a fool.

And they're also going to look like traitors.

Not that they didn't before, but now the MSM is reporting without a doubt, what her role was.

But you're probably right. And I hope you are. Let the pigs tighten the noose around their own necks.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 6:56 PM

  • I'm totally shocked at how little you actually KNOW about the "right wing".

KATIE FREAKING COURIC WAS NEVER A "DARLING".

I guess you just missed how we always refered to her on the Today show as "Katie Communist and Matt Liar"???

She's been a lib since day ONE.
She ALWAYS tosses softballs to libs and tries to play hard nosed with Republicans.

Perhaps you've forgotten the cheap shots she took at Reagan and Bush 41???

By Blogger Voltron, at 7:28 PM

  • And CBS of all places! ROTFLMAO!!!

Didn't they also have Dan Rathers FORGED but "factually accurate" military record on W???

    Ah yes, the "tiffany" network...LOL

By Blogger Voltron, at 7:31 PM

  • Thats it Volt.

    Squirm you nicotine addicted maggot.

    Squirm.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 7:40 PM

  • Thanks, Volt, you've answered that question ... the right wingers are going to try to avoid the Plame interview by attacking Katie.

By Blogger MCH, at 7:40 PM

  • The CIA has confirmed Plames status as a LEAD OFFICER, COVERT OP, and HIGHLY CLASSIFIED.

The opertion was dubbed operation "MERLIN" and was designed to keep Iran from aquiring nuclear weapons.

Nothing this half baked twit says is going to change that fact.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 7:46 PM

  • And whats even more hilarious about watching this "waterboy" bemoaning Couric for the story, is this wasn't just the news.

It was 60 Minutes. The most famous and well respected news show in the world.

But when the truth comes out, all little nazi waterboys like Voltron can do is cry about who's telling the story, never bothering to check first that the CIA reported the information, and its also in the DOJ's offical filings in the Libby case.

No this idiot thinks he can just toss out a few "lol's" and cast doubt on irrefutable fact.

    But he can't.

All he can do now is solidify his role as an utter fool.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 8:32 PM

  • Whats really an interesting development here today, is the news that the Inspector General is hinting at Gonzales being investigated for criminal conspiracy.

Because if thats true, and Gonzo comes under investigation, then you KNOW he'll be singing like a canary.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 8:49 PM

  • Gee Barf, wasn't it YOU that said:

"And just think. Up until yesterday she was the "sweetheart of the right wing"."

No matter what else happens, THAT'S FUNNY.

By Blogger Voltron, at 8:50 PM

  • And with the Plame story coming out on 60 Minutes this evening, and Bush at a 24 percent approval rating, things are looking pretty grim for the Bushites.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 8:51 PM

  • Roll Call reported that staffers on the hill were calling Couric that. She also was one of the primary advocates of the war, reporting for the administration whatever they asked. She was given special access, and was made famous with her "Navy seals are cool" crap.

But fine, you want to say you never liked her? Fine.

Cause thats not the story, and the story is not predicated in the LEAST on that "tidbit".

    It doesn't change a thing.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 8:56 PM

  • 500 words about Valerie Plame, and you, like the waterboy troll you are, try to fixate the story on Katie Couric, because of one single off the cuff remark.

I have evidence to have said that, see Roll Call, or ThinkProgress. But if you don't accept it it doesn't matter, because its not the story, and it has nothing to do with the story. The story is Valerie Plame WAS a covert op, and highly classifed lead officer of a highly classifed program code named "merlin" that was designed to keep Iran from obtaining nukes, and that took years and years to develop, and was destroyed overnight, because the White House wanted to smear her husband to sell their war.

    THATS the story dickhead.

And I promise you you won't change that fact.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:01 PM

  • I know you think I just make stuff up, or am uninformed and just repeat one sources story but I've been following the Plame affair ever since it broke, and researching anything I can find on it.

I may have wrote todays article in a hurry, but the knowledge has been there for a long, long time.

I can assure you trucker, that on your best day, you're not as smart as me on my worst.

Which is evident by our career choices and your personal habits.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:06 PM

  • Plame was a CIA Covert Op.

Bush and Cheney lied and said she was not, and you swallowed it. (which is not the only thing of theirs you've likely swallowed).

But I knew back during the Libby hearings that she was, because its in Fitzgeralds filings. The CIA confirmed it. But they refused to let Plame talk, and she's been forced to listen to worms like you, who sit on your grannyhips smoking two packs a day and watching I love Lucy reruns, while calling her a glorified secretary.

Well tonight she got her chance to speak. And 60 Minutes was given permission by the CIA to report her offical status, and the codename of her assignment (all which has been out there but not in the MSM news, so you guys pretended it wasn't), and now the country knows what those of us who are better informed always knew.

That Plame WAS a covert op, and Plames status when she was outed WAS CLASSIFIED, and that when the White House outed her, they destroyed YEARS of painstaking work and resources in the middle east, and comprimised possibly hundreds of other operatives and informants, some of which may actually have been killed.

You called yourself a patriot and when you first came in, I sort of believed you at least wanted your country to succeed, and you expected it to be good.

But tonight you've confirmed what I have been casually calling you for so long. That you're really just a dirty, rotten piece of garbage who'd betray his own country, if it meant helping his right wing causes.

You sicken me, and the country suffers because of scumbags like you.

    :|

    No offense.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:14 PM

  • You call yourself a patriot and a loyal American, in the same breath that you smear and slander and mock a woman who devoted TWENTY FUA$#KING YEARS of her life to her country in the CIA.

20 F@#@#KING YEARS OF HER LIFE, to protect this country, and you, who never even served a day in uniform, think you're better because you buy Bush's bullshit.

What an absolute wretch you must be.

And talking to you is a waste of time. Because guys like you never see what you really are.

But everyone else in the world, does.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:19 PM

  • And thanks for confirming your status as nothing more than a troll.

You proved that today with your hit and run tactics and again tonight.

You ran from my question earlier, first trying to insert a strawman argument about something I never said and HIDING BEHIND THE TROOPS like a coward, and then when I called you on it and stuck to the question I asked you, you ran away and hid, until you crawled in here and pulled another hit and run, trying to change the subject to make the story about Katie Couric, instead of what the story was about.

You're a troll and a liar, and not a very good one at that.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:29 PM

  • And you're also afraid of the Plame story tonight.

    And you should be.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:36 PM

  • And Gonzo going under criminal investigation has got you worried too. I know the White House is.

Because we all know he'll be singing like a canary.

    A little Mexican canary.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 9:38 PM

  • Well, I think "the darling of the left wing" Sean Hannity is going to cover some of that ground tonight.

By Blogger Voltron, at 4:53 AM

  • Valerie Plame is a genuine American patriot and hero.

What Bush, Cheney, Rove and Libby did to her, was not just criminal but, immoral. Plame was outed and her safety and the safety of her family and her contacts put at risk.

The people who did this to her should be taken via a military transport plane to The Hague and stand trial as war criminals.

By Blogger Christopher, at 5:44 AM

  • What an outrage! Whether or not you are a liberal, mainstreamer or raging conservative, you have to see this as plain wrong.

I have just begun my sojourn into political blogging and have pasted excerpts of this over as my lead today. This is an amazing article and an amazing site. I will be creating a link to "Lydia Cornell" for certain. Let freedom ring or not...

  • Let's not forget that Plame's husband, Amb. Joe Wilson started all the leaking, starting with the NY Times. He also beieved that Iraq posessed WMDs.

Listen to Wilson admitting that was leaking to the Times here

    A few questions:

If Plame's name was illegally leaked, why didn't the independent prosecutor indict anyone on the alleged leak?

Why was the Plame/Wilson lawsuit against Bush thrown out of court on summary judgement?

If Wilson was so concerned about his wife's so called "cover," why did he supply her cover name to Who's Who here

    More points from Wizbang

Robert Novak has finally revealed what he knew about Valerie Plame before he wrote his infamous column, when he knew it, and (mostly) who told it to him. And if Novak is to be given credibility, here's how it unfolded.

Novak was interviewing an unnamed high-level source (let's call him "Skippy") about various matters. During the course of the investigation, Skippy casually let slip that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson's trip to Africa to investigate the possibility that Iraq was attempting to obtain material for weapons of mass destruction was pushed forward by Wilson's wife, who worked at the CIA.

Later, Novak realized the significance of Skippy's slip when it started being passed around that Wilson's public accounts of his investigation -- that it turned up nothing -- were at odds with reports of his classified report. The notion that Wilson and his wife might have had their own agenda for his trip started looking more and more likely.

Novak called Karl Rove to confirm that it was Wilson's wife who had pushed for Wilson to get the job, and not Vice President Cheney's office, as Wilson was saying. Rove confirmed it.

At this point, Novak consulted Joseph Wilson's entry in Who's Who to determine the wife's name -- up until now not stated by anyone -- and published his infamous column.

Novak then calls the CIA to confirm that Valerie Plame works for them, and the CIA's spokesman confirms it.

Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald has the names of the CIA spokesman, Karl Rove, and Skippy, but declined to pursue any charges against any of them.

To date, the only person charged with anything in this matter is Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff, "Scooter" Libby (who may or may not also be "Skippy" -- nobody is saying who Skippy really is), for perjury. Libby, in essence, is accused about lying about telling the truth about a liar, namely Joseph Wilson.

Joseph Wilson will not get to see Karl Rove, Skippy, or anyone else "frog-marched out of the White House."

    To sum up:

The Wilsons arranged for Joseph Wilson to take the trip to Africa on behalf of the CIA for their own reasons. Whether this was to jump-start his career or make a political attack against the Bush administration is unknown.

Wilson himself began politicizing his trip when he started lying about two things: who chose him to go, and what he found.

The exposing of Plame's employment at the CIA was a direct consequence of her and her husband's actions, intended to prove the lies Wilson was telling about who sent him and what he found.

Although he has not publicly stated so, the actions of Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald indicate that he does not believe that the publicity that Plame worked for the CIA violated any laws.

Scooter Libby is once again proof of the old adage that "it isn't the crime, but the coverup." If Libby had simply told the truth about telling the truth about Joe Wilson's lies, he most likely wouldn't be under indictment.

Bart, I know you're all excited about this, but by tomorrow, it will be old news, just like most the items you report breathlessly.

By Blogger Talll Texan, at 7:25 AM

  • TT - Wilson did NOT reveal his wife as a covert operative. How you could interpret that from Who's Who is insane.

    You are a liar.

Bush committed treason, as did Cheney, Rove and LIbby.

Bush said he'd prosecute the leaker to the full extent of the law.

Bush is a war criminal He has committed high crimes and misdemeanors.

By their fruits you shall know them.

Obviously all your machinations on the right, all the manipulation of media and the Bill Clinton witch-hunt backfired.

"Republicanism" - the old fashioned kind is dead. And conservativism has proved to be another word for greed and bigotry.

The People have spoken: only 23% approve of Bush and these are not people who are literate or aware of their surroundings.

The People -- over 80% of shell-shocked Regan conservatives as well as Blue and Yellow-dog Dems, along with massive youth - young Progressives HAVE SPOKEN: Bill Clinton is more popular than ever, even several Republicans have admitted he was a good president... and your party has made it easy for America. Lying doesn't work. In the end, good always wins.

In the end, good (God) always wins.

Liberals are the true Christians, by the way.

Comapared to the 11% who approve of the Democrat Congress?

I never said he did, but do you have a link to support that assertion?

You mean the same Bill Clinton who wagged his finger and forefully said "I never had sex with that woman"? That Bill Clinton. Yeah, he's a paragon of virtue and truth telling.

Lydia said "You are a liar."

    Show me one lie.

  • TT, Barfeus got one other thing wrong too.

He claimed the CIA agreed with his report that Iraq had not tried to buy yellow cake from Niger.

They did not. Quite the opposite.

It is well known that an Iraqi delegation went to Niger to "expand trade relations". The fact that both Wilson and the Nigerians report they didn't ask about yellow cake proves nothing. What else could Sadam have wanted from Niger?

If I go to the corner drug dealer and ask to expand trade relations with him, do you think the cops will buy the line "I'm NOT trying to buy drugs"?

Because that's what Wilson, Plame and Barf are trying to sell us.

By Blogger Voltron, at 10:37 AM

She doesn't seem too concerned about her cover.

  • TT - by "liberals are the true Christians, I mean liberal values are Christ's values: charity, peacemaking, tolerance, non-judgment, compassion, generosity, sharing, equal right, equitable wages, etc.

    Christian fundamentalism is actually anti-Christian.

It is the exact opposite of Christ's teachings: harsh judgments, condeming others, unequal distribution of wealth.

You know exactly what I mean. In fact, Jews, Hindus, Liberals, gays and anyone who loves his neighbor as himself, or loves his enemy and practices the Golden Rule is automatically abiding in Christ's admonition "to love one another." Which is the essence of Christianity. Often people who do not even declare themselves a technically Christian are more pure Christians than so-called Bible thumping "Christians"

You have to open your mind and think outside the box: substance over style. Spirit over matter, the spirit of the law, (love) not the letter.

This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.

The Republican Greatest Commandment (Bush 22:18-23) I love money, money money money. Quarters Pennies Nickles Dimes, Wealth and riches of our times. Oh I love money, money money money, Cash or coins, bonds or checks, treasure from old sucken wrecks, Oh I love money!!!!

  • Absolutely an act of treason.

Bush/Cheney outed Plame who was working to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Perhaps the real motive of Bush/Cheney was to prevent Plame from doing her job so they could further their own agenda of bombing Iran.

I'm betting Cheney had Iran in his cross hairs even before the first bombs fell on Iraq.

  • Good rundown on the whole Plamegate thing. I never understood why Robert Novak wasn't jailed. It was his choice to print this leaked information. Printing classified or secret information is a felony, as far as I know.

In any case, let's get the impeachment started. It's never too late.

Because that was the one MY 10:50 AM post was in response to.

    I KNOW I didn't delete mine.

I wonder if TT or Lydia deleted theirs?

By Blogger Voltron, at 3:41 PM

Of course, Voltron, If you could delete your own posts and decided to do so whenever you realized you were wrong, we'd never hear from you. Life would be so sweet.

I wasn't sure of the 7:21 am one.

    But I know I didn't delete mine.

Well, you're wrong about it being the opposite. First, their were logistical and financial obstacles for such transactions that were never discussed. Second, the former Prime Minister reported no specific talk of yellow cake ever occured. While you're correct in stating that its possible that this independent businessman MAY have been in bed with Saddam on WMD, and MAY have been wanting to obtain the yellow cake, it certainly did not qualify as the "smoking gun" that it was presented to the world as.

    Also, it wasn't even close to what the President stated in his State of the Union;

"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa"..

That just was not true. All we knew was an Iraqi businessman talked with the former prime minister of Niger about improving trade relations with his country.

That has nothing to do with "SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES OF URANIUM".

How can you quantify something that wasn't even discussed? And how can you state it as fact, when its merely speculation?

    And as for the CIA, on July 11, 2003, George Tenet made this official statement;

Because this report, in our view, did not resolve whether Iraq was or was not seeking uranium from abroad, it was given a normal and wide distribution, but we did not brief it to the President, Vice-President or other senior Administration officials.

So he essentially agreed with Wilson, who also pointed out that it certainly was POSSIBLE that this was the goal, but this was merely speculation and there was no evidence of any kind of existing sales agreement for a "SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT".

I know you're chompin at the bit to blast anything I write, but you're going to need to do a little better homework than that.

Thats because you don't have admin privileges Einstein.

Which part of that didn't you understand?

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 4:28 PM

  • And besides, as always your argument is a big fat Red Herring Volt.

Because even if Joe Wilson was completely and utterly wrong, it doesn't give them the right to destroy years of covert operations and to out a CIA agent, which in turns outs hundreds of other agents and informants with whom she worked and had contact.

I honestly admit I am surprised at you two. You talk a good game about loving your country and all, but when someone outs a CIA agent who's dedicated 20 years, which is her entire adult life to her country, and to protecting you from the nuclear weapons you're so scared of, all you can do is bash her and praise the outers.

I thought you guys might somewhere have some sense of actual patriotism, or a reasonable level of decency, but I guess I was wrong.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 4:35 PM

  • I raz you guys and call you names to get under your skin in a debate. But I always thought that if you saw treason out of the White House, you'd say, "enough already".

And a cowardly one at that.

I can't imagine the kind of person it takes to condone or defend that kind of thing.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 4:40 PM

  • "June 2003: According to the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, the following interview with Richard Armitage at the State Department transpired "about a month before" Robert Novak’s column appeared on July 14, 2003.

Woodward: Well it was Joe Wilson who was sent by the agency, isn’t it?
Armitage: His wife works for the agency.
Woodward: Why doesn’t that come out? Why does that have to be a big secret?
    Armitage: (over) Everybody knows it.
    Woodward: Everyone knows?
    Armitage: Yeah.
And they know ’cause Joe Wilson’s been calling everybody. He’s pissed off ’cause he was designated as a low level guy went out to look at it. So he’s all pissed off."

That's BOB WOODWARD, watergate fame and leftie hero...

    WILSON OUTED HIS OWN WIFE.

By Blogger Voltron, at 4:48 PM

  • Oh so now you're basing your argument on something Bob Woodward said?

    :\

    Will wonders never cease?

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:01 PM

  • Bart, the Cubans (and therefore the Russians/Soviets) knew she worked at the CIA. She was outed many years ago, which is the prevailing view.

Her husband was making the rounds as a confidential source to many investigative reporters, who, more often than not, trade information. She may not have been a household name, but, because of her husband, the reporters, who can be quite clever, pieced the information together for themselves.

She was in Who's Who under her cover name, the same name she used with her foreign contacts. She drove everyday to "Langley" where any asset could observe her. That is hardly covert.

She donated to Al Gore listing her non-official cover organization, Brewster Jennings.

If you or I were a foreign asset, we could have figured it all out in a couple of hours. She had already been compromised years ago, which is why she returned from overseas.

Patrick Fitzgeralsd is about as thorough and tenacious a prosecutor that you will find, and he never brought charges on the alleged outing. He could not indict anyone on her alleged outing, and procuring an indictment is notoriously easy. The burden of proof is to simply persuade a majority of the grand jurors that, by a preponderance of the evidence, a crime has been committed.

Fitzgerald could not do that, and that speaks volumes.

By Blogger Talll Texan, at 5:01 PM

  • TT, you're full of shit.

I won't even address your argument because you keep changing it.

First it was they didn't out her.

Then it was she was'nt a covert op.

    Now she was already outed.

Well she wasn't outed in the press jackass, and she wasn't outed in the middle east. As for the rest of it, more excuses from a nutjob trying to defend treason.

Your credibility with me is shot, so sell it to someone else.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:06 PM

  • I've got a pizza in the oven.

    Later losers.

By Blogger BARTLEBEE, at 5:07 PM

  • Bart, those are all facts, and your counter argument is that I am "full of $hit"?

Check the links I provided this morning and do some real thinking.

    Bart said

"First it was they didn't out her.

Then it was she was'nt a covert op.

    Now she was already outed."

These are not mutually exclusive events, and yet you present them as if they are.

By Blogger Talll Texan, at 5:13 PM

  • Mo thats not a counter argument its me telling you I'm done playing the troll game. You guys think you're fooling someone but you're not. The only reason you guys are back in force is because Lydia's show's doing well and you've been sent back in to smear her, like you clowns do with everyone.

Your information is bullshit, and I won't go tit for tat with you until I prove you wrong and you dissappear like the stupid troll you are. I'm done. Get it cheesehead? Sell it to someone else. Plame lived her identity and everyone knows that. You guys just look stupid now, after 60 Minutes reported that she irrefutably WAS a covert op.

The CIA confirmed this to CBS, so given the CIA and you, I'll take the CIA's word for her status with the CIA.

If you think you have evidence to the contrary then you'll need to contact CBS and I'm sure they'll retract the story, just like they did with the Rather story.

    So don't tell me.

    Tell them.
